The Plasticene
2024
Video art / Installation

We currently reside in the Plasticene, a new geological era characterized by the extensive use of plastics, which has brought about a significant transformation of Earth's surface, atmosphere, and oceans. The artwork, The Plasticene, serves as a critique of how the reckless production and consumption of plastics might impact our ecology, including Homo sapiens.
The Plasticene presents a fictional future scenario: numerous plastics, produced and discarded by human beings, resistant to decomposition for millions of years, have metamorphosed into new fossils. These fossilized remnants, mirroring the forms of ancient creatures, led scientists to a misunderstanding – they believed the fossils were composed of natural organisms and named them based on ancient animals. As human faces are projected onto the fossil-like sculptures, they uncover the deformations of our species. The artist suggests that in a distant future where plastics evolve into fossils, genetic alterations in humans will be driven by environmental changes resulting from the overconsumption of toxic materials used in plastic production.
